Wicked was totally WICKED!

Phew, just came out of a pretty activity-packed weekend. I shan’t bore you with all the details, but I think it’s worth mentioning that one of the activities included a long over-due one-on-one date with hubs on Sunday afternoon.

Thanks to a couple from church who agreed to help babysit Nathan, we were able to have three precious whole hours alone in the afternoon to ourselves which we decided to dedicate to watching this…

I thoroughly enjoyed it! Probably the fact that hubs and I were out by ourselves on an actual date also amplified the whole wonderfulness of the experience in general. But the musical itself is fantastic – it’s such a fun, witty and moving story, and such a clever twist on a prequel to the Wizard of Oz. Everyone has a history and a side to their story – even the “wicked”. If you’re thinking of watching it, don’t expect rainbows and cutesy munchkins in this show.

Hubs and I had great fun talking about everything afterward going over the characters and our favourite scenes and songs.

I was quite surprised that one of hubs’ favourite songs was Popular which was the dorm room scene where Glinda (the “good” witch”) was giving Elphaba (the “wicked” witch of the west) a makeover – hubby really liked the quirky twang of Glinda’s singing “po-PIUUUU-lar!

Our common favourite song was For Good which was also one of my favs (*singing out loud* “…and now whatever way our stories end I know you have re-written mine by being my friend… because I knew you, I have been changed for good”)

If you know me, you’ll know I have a thing for melancholic numbers in musicals – so my other favourite song was I’m Not That Girl which framed the love triangle in the plot… yes, I enjoy that sort of heart-wrenching drama.

I also thought it was worth sharing this short clip of the signature song Defying Gravity – every great musical needs one of those grand scenes where they pull out all the stops with the lights, smoke, ensemble and the lead character pulling a big and high note at the end.

I know some of you will think this post was rather pointless. But it’s just my way of continuing to soak up and prolong the amazing experience we had. Just in case I don’t pick up my phone today, it’s probably because I’m replaying the songs continuously on my comp all day today ^_^
